Happy Birthday Jordan

Dear Jordan,

Happy 1st birthday to my bug, my sweet baby boy. It seems impossible that a year has already flown by. It's amazing how you've gone from the helpless infant that was placed on my chest, barely able to even figure out nursing, to the fairly independent -gasp- toddler that can climb in, on, and out of everything, that can almost walk, that can say a few "words," and that can steal my heart with that goofy smile.

Jordan, you are an amazing little boy whose personality is already starting to shine. I cannot believe you have been in our lives for a year now. The time has gone too fast and I feel like I have missed so much already. I cherish all the moments we've had together -- the snuggles, the smiles you give me when you see me, all the times you have made me laugh from your innocence or your mischievousness.

From your unexpected arrival to your silly outbursts and your goofy expressions, there is never a dull moment with you around. You are the best "mistake" I've ever made and I love you more than words could ever express. Here's to another great year with you as my little buddy, my {love}bug.

Flashback Friday 9/9/11

It's Tuesday. And it's just like any other day. Except it isn't. I'm seventeen, a senior in high school, and on top of the world. At least, that's how I see it right now. I'm in my first class of the day -- AP English -- and suddenly we're turning on the TV. There's been a tragic accident in New York involving an airplane. We watch the news the rest of the class period, thinking nothing of it, and then I head off to band. We're having our pictures taken today so it's chaotic when I enter the band room. I roll my eyes when I see my band director, who I don't care much for, sitting on a chair in the middle of the band room watching TV instead of helping people get ready. I head off to get my uniform and get changed and next thing I know we're all heading over to the stadium for our pictures. It seems to take forever. When we're all sitting there after our pictures were taken, one of the parent helpers makes an announcement.

That tragic accident was no accident at all. A second plane is involved. And there is no doubt this was an act of terrorism. The freshman girls cry. I feel nothing. Just this deep pit in the middle of my stomach. It's indescribable. Then again, I don't need to describe it because we all felt the same thing. And we all will never forget that feeling.

The next few days are a blur. There's tears. There's anger. There's feelings of helplessness in the midst of tragedy. There's a burst of patriotism like nothing I've ever witnessed. And there's an overwhelming sense of pride in knowing that I'm an American. Flags are displayed on cars, stores, homes. People are wearing red, white, and blue like it's the 4th of July. Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA" is being playing ad nauseam on the radio. And my life is changing in ways I don't even know yet.

September 11, 2001 was a life changing day for most, if not all, Americans. It was a day when the helplessness I felt went beyond what I'd ever felt before. A day when I knew that I was not content unless I was making a difference. It was a day when I gave up my dreams of being a writer or an editor or a photographer and started my journey towards my nursing career. When tragedy struck, I wanted to be there. I wanted to be able to help. I never wanted to feel that helpless again.

Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can't take that away.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA

Flashback Friday 7/22

It's hard to believe Jacob was ever this little. Here he is at approximately Jordan's age now. I remember the day this picture was taken. We had received this adorable onesie from my Uncle when Jacob was just a baby and I was thrilled to finally put it on him. We went and picked up my grandma from the airport that day for her 90th birthday celebration at our house. It was a really fun weekend.

This picture is also special to me because it was taken on September 30, 2009. Exactly one year before Jordan entered our lives. We had absolutely no idea back then that we'd be adding another precious boy to our family so soon. But I'm so happy with the way our lives have turned out.

Flashback Friday 7/1

This is Matt and me from our 4th of July 2005!
This is when I went all out as Miss Patriotic.
Since babies, I've sort of lost my oomph
But I do plan on decking out the boys in their patriotic gear this weekend!
Stay tuned!!

Flashback Friday 6/24

A blog that I frequently read, The Heir to Blair, came up with a great idea to do a flashback picture/story every Friday. I'm definitely going to play along with Flashback Fridays and what a perfect day for my first flashback!!

Five years ago today, June 24, 2006, I awoke at my parents' house and laid calmly in bed staring at what I was going to wear that day. How do I remember this in such detail? Well, you see, I was staring at my wedding dress. And that is the first memory I have of my wedding day.

I could write for hours upon hours of all the memories I have from that wonderful day. But I'll spare ya.

It's hard to believe it's been five years since our wedding day. It seems so monumental and at the same time, so ordinary. So much has changed these last five years. I graduated college and got a job. Matt went back to school. We bought a house, adopted several animals (most of which we since adopted back out), and were blessed with two beautiful baby boys. We've had arguments but we've also filled our lives with amazing memories. I couldn't imagine going through life with anyone else.

I love you, Matthew James. Thank you for the last five years.

...and they lived happily ever after...
