Jake's First ER Visit

We had a rough night with Jacob last night. He was fine all day - a little more naughty than usual but totally himself. We had dinner, he and I took a shower together, got ready for bed, and we put him down early (relatively, since he's been pushing his bedtime back farther and farther) Matt and I watched an episode of Desperate Housewives and then I went to bed at 10. Matt went to look something up on the computer and heard Jake get out of bed and start crying. He went into his room, picked him up, and Jake threw up all over Matt. Matt cleaned him up and brought him in the bathroom. He got me up to tell me so I went to get Jake and put him back to bed while Matt cleaned up the bathroom. He threw up all over me. It was in my hair and running down into my bra. I don't do well with vomit. Poor Matt. He was like "Just get in the shower. Get in the shower with your clothes on." So Jake and I got in the shower again. We were both shivering. We got out and got him ready for bed again. We put him to bed and as soon as we laid down in bed we heard him throw up again on the monitor. So we went in and changed him and his sheets and I rocked him in the chair. Matt called the doctor and they said if he continued for 3-4 hours we should bring him in to the ER for fluids. I was planning to just stay up with him and rock him until he fell asleep. He just kept throwing up over and over. He finally fell asleep at 1am.

Matt said he'd stay in his bedroom with him so I went back to bed. Slept for almost an hour when Jordan woke up to nurse. I nursed him in bed and heard Matt get up and rinse out Jake's bowl 2-3 times. Then Matt came in the bedroom and said he wanted to bring him in to the ER because he kept throwing up and he was acting really weak. So we called my MIL over to stay with Jordan and we headed in to the hospital. The newly opened children's hospital has it's own ER now so we didn't have to wait at all. We got there at 4am. He threw up in the car right when we pulled up.

It was Jake's first time to the ER. He looked so cute in his little hospital gown sitting on the stretcher. He sat in my lap in the rocking chair most of the time. He was really proud of his ID bracelet and kept holding it up and saying "Jacob Michael"

The nurse came in and asked a bunch of questions. Then the resident came in. Then the attending came in. The attending physician was actually the same dr that delivered Jordan! So now I finally have a face to her name as well () I didn't say anything to her though. They gave Jake some zofran that dissolved in his mouth and he felt fine after that. We watched most of Cars while we were there. Then they brought Jake a slushie to see if he could keep it down. He picked a blue one. He loved it. He kept saying "more blue wawa" He was able to keep it all down and we were discharged home around 6am. We put Jake to bed again at 6.30 when we got home. He didn't move a muscle until he woke up at 9.30ish. He hasn't thrown up but he's had diarrhea now twice this morning already. They said we should expect that. He's in good spirits this morning. I am too surprisingly for only 2.5 hours of sleep!

Five Question Friday

I haven't done one of these in awhile because the questions haven't been interesting. This week's aren't terrible so I'm back!

1. If you had $1,000 to donate to a charity, which would you choose?
Probably the American Cancer Society or some sort of cancer research. I also support the ASPCA.

2. Snow days: Do you welcome them happily or are they a pain in your butt?
Well, nurses don't get snow days so they are mostly just a pain in my butt.

3. What talent did you wish you had and why?
I wish I was more crafty. Especially with sewing.

4. Are you a news, politics or celebrity gossip junkie?
Celebrity gossip, for sure!

5. What is your favorite "cocktail"? (Are you a beer person, a kiddie cocktail junkie, or perhaps your more the "Cosmo" kind?! Anything flies...doesn't hafta be alcoholic!)
I don't drink so I'd say a root beer :-)

The Great Freezer Defrosting

We recently had to defrost our downstairs freezer. This wouldn't have been a huge deal except for the fact that the freezer was overtaken by frozen milk bags. I had over 100 bottles pumped and frozen and would have been more than devastated if they didn't survive the defrost. Since breastmilk has to be used or discarded 24 hours after thawing and cannot be refrozen, we had to make sure it stayed cold. We borrowed two big coolers from my in-laws and the help of Mother Nature. For once, I was thankful for the cold and snow.

The coolers were big enough that we expected to use one for milk and the other for the rest of the food. We brought the smaller (but still BIG) cooler downstairs and filled it overflowing with bottles. But, there were more!!!

Matt then transfered the bottles to the bigger cooler. They were still overflowing. We had to put some bottles in the next cooler. In the end, we used the two big borrowed coolers and two small coolers of our own. We also stuffed our upstairs freezer with as much as we could as well. And a couple of things just sat outside in the snow by themselves.

The freezer was finally defrosted and at 12am we were able to bring everything back downstairs and begin organizing the freezer. Unfortunately, the milk got all mixed up during the moves so we had to resort by date and time. However, working together, it didn't take too long this time. We decided to count them while we were at it. Final count: 116 bottles

Thank you Girls, thank you.

Lactation Cookies

Last week I finally got around to trying out Lactation Cookies (recipe at the end). They are cookies that are designed to increase milk supply in breastfeeding moms. However, they are also really good for you even if you are not breastfeeding. And they are good! At first, I'll be honest, I didn't like them. I thought they were a little bitter (from the brewer's yeast) but after the initial cookie I tried, I couldn't get enough of them!! My only complaint is that they stick really bad to the pan -- and to each other. Even though it doesn't call for it, I think next time I'll try to grease the pan and see if it makes a difference. I'll update this if it does.

So, do they work? Well, yes, I think so. I used to pump about 8.5 oz total between both sides. Then when I made these, I was pumping about 12 oz total. After they were gone, I noticed my supply dropped down again. It could just be a coincidence. I made some more yesterday so we'll see if it increases again.

Lactation Cookies
(Recipe from: The Leaky B@@b)

1cup butter (softened)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
4 tablespoons of water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons brewer's yeast
3 cup rolled oats
1 cup chocolate chips

Soak the flaxseed in the water for a few minutes to soften.
Mix dry ingrediants.
Cream together butter and sugar, add eggs, flaxseed and vanilla.
Add to dry ingredients.

Drop on cookie sheet .
Bake 8 - 12 minutes on 375ยบ.
Enjoy.

another doctor's visit

I took the boys to the doctor tonight when I got home from work. Matt had called to make the appointment while I was gone. As I've mentioned in the past, Jacob has a sore on his penis. It's still not really healing even with the prescription hydrocortisone cream from the dermatologist. It is looking better though. He also has developed a spot (an ulcer, if you will) on his bottom that isn't healing. Today he had some blisters as well. Big sigh. Then Jordan, a few days ago, developed a rash on his thigh, almost at the diaper line but a little more down his thigh. Another big sigh.

Their appointment was at 5.40pm. Jacob was seen first. She said the sore on his penis didn't bother her much but the ones on his bottom were of concern. She took a culture of them and checked it for strep. That came back negative. She prescribed a stronger triple antibiotic ointment to put on, mixed with desitin. She thinks, as do we, the reason he's not healing is because as soon as he's wet, it washes the medication away. She said to treat it like a burn.

Jordan was checked next. As soon as she opened the diaper she said it looked like yeast. It looked a lot worse tonight than it has. I still felt really stupid for not picking up on that. I had even been wiping it away, thinking someone had put desitin on his bottom. I even asked Matt the other day why he put it on him! Failure of a mother once more. I asked about thrush and she looked in his mouth and didn't see any signs of it so it's just on his diaper area and hopefully will stay there. We're going to put nystatin and desitin on that.

So both the boys are going to be in paper pants for awhile, since desitin will ruin the absorbency of the cloth diapers. I am so bummed about that. I really despise paper diapers. Boo.

Hopefully we can get them healed once and for all though. Poor boys!!

Jacob Michael: 25 Months

On Wednesday (1.5.11) Jacob was 25 months old. He weighed 32.0 lbs and was approx 34.6 inches tall. This is an approximate because he didn't want to cooperate too much when it came to measuring his height.

This past month we celebrated Jacob's 3rd Christmas (which just seems weird to me since he is barely 2 years old) He had a blast opening presents and getting all kinds of attention. Santa brought him a kitchen set which was a huge hit. He's been feeding us all kinds of food since. He is so cute when he puts things in the oven or microwave because he'll turn the knob (on the oven only) then go "beep beep beep beep" and pretend to push buttons. Then he'll say "ready" and take it out. Adorable! Makes me laugh every time!

Jacob's become quite a stinker. Lots of drama and meltdowns. His new thing is fighting sleep. Every nap and every bedtime is a huge fight, no matter how tired he is. I can't wait for this phase to pass.

He now consistently says two and three word sentences. He repeats everything we say and imitates everything we do. New words this month are: alright, arm, bright, brother, cry, donut, egg, get, ham, kitchen, pepper, potato, present, ready, roll, and sick. There are probably more but this is what I can remember. (I've been trying to keep track)

He has taken a small interest in his potty again. He sometimes will tell us if he has to pee and go on there. He's been keeping dry diapers during these times too. Other times he will continue to go in his diapers. He refuses to poop on the potty. We are basically just letting him train himself at this point.

He doesn’t really have any new tricks this month other than the improvement in his talking skills. He does things daily that amaze me with how smart he is and how much he puts together and remembers. He has regressed in counting and seems to only be able to count to three now. We are working on letters and numbers. He can recite the end of Brown Bear (the page with all the animals on it) SO cute! His favorite food lately is yogurt.

Here are a few pictures from this month.

New Year

Happy New Year 2011. It has to be better than last year, right?

Now that it's the new year, I am anxious to start my challenge of Project 365. Feel free to join me here: http://365project.org/popita624/365
I have also created a page at the top of this blog with a link to my project so it can be found again easily.

Most of my pictures will probably be of Jordan. I already take a picture of him every day. So if nothing else exciting happens that day, that will be my go to picture :-) It's so fun to watch how much a baby grows and changes in their first year of life. I am so glad I am nutty like that because I have thoroughly enjoyed looking back at all of the pictures of Jacob's first year.

If you decide to join this challenge (and you can start one ANY day of the year!) please let me know so I can follow you.
