Five Question Friday 1/27/12

1. Do you swim in the winter?
Heck no!! Unless it's in a heated indoor pool.

2. Do you love or hate winter?
Generally, I hate it. This year, it's not so bad :-) I love that I can still see my grass at the end of January!

3. Do you put makeup/actual clothes on when you know you're going to be home all day with just family?
I have actual clothes on. I very rarely will put on makeup though. Sorry family!

4. How old were you when you had your first alcoholic beverage?
Um... probably about 18 or so :-/

5. How many ill calls in a 12 month period do you think are acceptable?
It depends on how you consider ill calls. At my work, if you call in more than one day in a row, it is considered ONE ill call. But if you come back to work and then call in again, it's considered two. If you are counting them like that, then I think I have to agree with The Mama and say how ever many days you work in a pay period is acceptable. So, that would be 6 for me.

At my work I am only allowed 4 though. One every 3 months. That's usually enough. But once I got real sick and just couldn't seem to get over it even when I thought I was better. It was not enough then. I probably got written up for calling into work too late (we have to call before 5am) and too many times in a row. But you can't predict waking up with a fever of 103+ and I don't think anyone wants a nurse with a high fever who can't even walk straight to the bathroom taking care of them. I know I wouldn't!!

It's Out There {Guest Post}

Thanks for the post, Bernard Vasquez

For years I’ve only had basic television service. Nothing fancy just the bare bones channels as I never really watched much television. Now that I’m retired and have more tie, I’ve found it harder to find shows I want to watch since I’m able to watch television at different times. After checking out my choices at www.CannonSatellite.com and looking at the show listings for the stations I could add, I think it’s time fr an upgrade! Because I wasn’t watching that much television I never realized how many things there are on that I would be interested in. Of course, with this addition I’m also thinking I’m going to need an extra television (or two). Maybe one in the kitchen so I can watch and cook along with Paula Deen. And maybe one in the bedroom so I can keep up with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in their quest to reform the election process while I get ready for bed. There’s a whole world of entertainment out there I never knew existed!

Personal Challenge: Day 3

Today was Weightless Wednesday and the challenge was to weigh yourself. Easy enough!

I am not up or down from where I was on Sunday when I weighed myself. No real surprise there.

Up next: Thirsty Thursday. Drinking 8+ glasses of water a day (and nothing else to drink!) This will be a big challenge being at work. But if I force myself to drink a small cup (8oz) of water after I finish my morning meds and drink a big glass (16oz) at lunch, plus another 8oz cup before I leave for the day, I'll only have 4 more glasses to do in the evening. It can be done but it will be challenging. Wish me luck!

Personal Challenge: Day 2

I'm sitting here hungry and grumpy. Today was a harder day for me, but I knew it was going to be. Today was Tiny Tuesday and the challenge was to eat portion sizes (or less). I have a huge problem with portion sizes and it's actually something I want to work on.

Breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal, sweetened with Mixed Berry applesauce (note to self: do not feed that to my children anymore, awful!!!!) 1 banana. 1 cup milk.

Lunch: Oh yeah, no lunch..... absolutely no time at work for any sort of break. I guess that's staying within portions.....

Dinner: not enough spaghetti, less sauce than a portion and less cheese than a portion. 1 breadstick. Water. Oh, and since I couldn't have another breadstick even though I really wanted one.... 1/2 cup of ice cream. Lol.

So... I met the challenge. But I'm hungry. And some of it just doesn't make sense -- like the ice cream thing. It would have been better to just eat a breadstick. But I guess the point is that you don't eat anything at all.

Tomorrow will be Weightless Wednesday and the only challenge is to weigh yourself. I think I can handle that...

Personal Challenge: Day 1

I decided to take the challenge I posted earlier this week from pinterest. I'm only committing to this week so far. Today was Meatless Monday. The Challenge: Obvious as it sounds, to avoid eating any meat for the day. This was by far the easiest day for me. After having avoided eating meat for five and a half years, avoiding it for a day is like nothing. I rarely even choose to eat meat for myself anyway.

For breakfast I had a bowl of Meijer's version of Special K with strawberries. For lunch we had macaroni and cheese with carrots and broccoli. For a snack I had some animal crackers. And I didn't end up eating anything for dinner except for two bites of Jacob's grilled cheese sandwich and one blueberry. I was too busy getting the kids ready and the house picked up some. So all in all, it was an easy "challenge" for day 1.

Tomorrow is Tiny Tuesday and I predict this is going to be a LOT harder for me. Tuesday is about watching your portion sizes -- something I am terrible at doing! I have already measured out my portions for breakfast. And my lunch is packed for at work. I'll update tomorrow evening on how the day goes. Wish me luck!!

Tips & Tricks For Breastfeeding an Older Infant or Toddler

I am writing this post as part of The Breastfeeding Blog Hop. This week's topic is Tips and Tricks for Breastfeeding an Older Infant or Toddler.

Breastfeeding Blog Hop hosted by The Slacker Mom

Nursing an older baby/toddler can be frustrating. There are times when you want to ring his {sweet, adorable, precious} little neck and there are times when you want to throw in the towel and just be done with it. If you thought nursing a baby was challenging, wait until nursing a toddler. Although the initial challenges have faded by toddlerhood, toddlers come with a whole new set of challenges. They are distracted. They like to nurse in funny positions. They have chompers. They are very very indecisive.

My tips for nursing a toddler are as follows.

Be patient. Follow Baby's Lead. It's easy to be frustrated when Baby plays a game of on-and-off that makes your head spin. But if he wants on, let him on. If he wants off, let him off. Repeat as necessary and just be patient. This also goes for weaning. Follow Baby's lead on when to wean. Don't stick to a strict feeding schedule but do allow him to nurse if he wants to. Your body will adjust your milk production to meet his needs.
Pump if Necessary! Going on that, pump if baby isn't showing an interest in nursing but you are becoming uncomfortable. The last thing you want to add to the mix is mastitis! Trust me!!!
Minimize Distractions. This is near impossible in our house when Big Brother comes over and climbs on top of Baby and/or kicks him in the head. Or when Big Brother plays with toys that make noise and Baby wants to turn his head to see what's happening. When possible, locate yourself in a quiet, distraction free zone.
Do Not Tolerate Biting. Jacob was a biter. Jordan has learned from the beginning that biting will not be tolerated. If baby bites, tell them no and remove them immediately. I put Jordan in "time out" for biting where he is not allowed to nurse for a set amount of time. This ticks him right off. He's only bitten me a handful of times, if that.
Try different positions. My favorite nursing positions have evolved over time. For an infant it was definitely cross-cradle or side-lying. Now that he's older, I find myself liking the cradle hold and sometimes the saddle hold. For me these are easier positions to keep him where I want him -- at the breast.
Enjoy it. This seems obvious and impossible all at the same time. But enjoy these moments. Although it sometimes seems as if they will, they won't last forever and believe me when I say, you will miss this.

Five Question Friday 1/13/12

I didn't even realize it was Friday the 13th until I typed this up.... good thing I'm not superstitious!!

1. What's the the last thing you bought for yourself?
Well just last night I bought the hair dye for my new color.... to be revealed this weekend! Once I finally make up my mind.... Red or Dark Brown??? I'm am SO indecisive!

2. What is your favourite meal on a cold winter day?

Beef Stew. I was supposed to make it on Wednesday but I was too lazy. So I was going to make it today but... um.... too lazy. Maybe I'll make it this weekend :-) I'll also post the recipe I use when I finally get around to making it, it's SO SO SO good!!

3. Have you started looking at swimsuits for this year, and do you buy a new one every year?

I used to buy a new swimsuit every year day. But that was back when I was a skinny mini. Last season I found a nice suit that covers up everything so I think I'll stick with that one again this year. Unless I find one that covers up even more! :-)

4. If you could be any candy what would you be and why?

I would be M&M's because they are the best candy ever. And because it's Matt & my nickname.... get it... Em & M. Yeah, we're lame. But we don't care!

5. What are you most passionate about?

I'm passionate about a LOT of things (pro-LIFE, anti-cancer, cloth diapers, shaken baby syndrome, animals) but what I am most passionate about is BREASTFEEDING.

*BONUS QUESTION* What is your favorite thing to "pin" on Pinterest?
Wow, I'm not sure I have a favorite. I am a little Pinterest-crazy. I like posting recipes, especially for super yummy and super bad for you things. I also like posting ideas of things to do with the kids, cake decorating ideas, and funny things. Seriously, if you search the humor boards on there, you will be in tears. Some of them are SO great!
