My Thoughts On The Easter Bunny

With Easter quickly approaching, it was time to make a crucial decision for our family -- the direction we were going to take Easter with the boys. Jake is old enough now that traditions are being made this year. The thought of The Easter Bunny weighed heavily on my mind so I was overjoyed with I brought my thoughts to my husband and he was in complete agreement with me. Here's what we decided: We are not going to tell our kids about The Easter Bunny.

I know what you're thinking, because it's the same thing I've heard multiple times: But you're stealing a piece of their childhood. But the way I see it, I'm not.

I still fully intend to incorporate many of the secular traditions of Easter into our family. We will still color Easter eggs and have an Easter egg hunt. We will still give the boys Easter baskets -- but they will know that the baskets and gifts come from Mom & Dad and not from an unbelievable large bunny. Instead, we will teach them about the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and how this day is perhaps the most important day in our lives.

So really, I don't think they are missing out on anything. In fact, I know they are not.

  1. My parents never did the Easter Bunny (or Santa or the tooth fairy) with me and I never felt I missed out. We do the Easter Bunny and Santa with our kids for one main reason- Paityn adores anyone in costume and just has so much fun with it. My shy little girl blossoms with a costumed character like she doesn't with any regular person. And we love seeing it. But she also knows what Easter is and we talk about it.
I feel confident in our decision. But I also know I was perfectly fine without those characters in my childhood, so I think if we decided against it, she'd be fine then, too.

  2. I can live with your decision and I actually like it. As long as they still get to have the fun stuff, I think it's a win- win. Love your careful consideration about fun and the true meaning of Easter. You guys are great parents. Mom
